| An interview with Sarah Mercer |
[May. 22nd, 2010|09:30 pm] |
We had the chance to sit down with out author Sarah Mercer talking about everything from her teen novels to her raunchy poetry, why she needed to get out of the city and her passion for a sport most people south of Canada take for granted. So here you go ladies be ready to google her for pictures because we're going to introduce you to your next crush.
So Sarah everyone is waiting for the second Mattie Harris book to come out what are the chances you'll give us any spoilers? Ok, we know that isn't possible how about some insight into how you created Mattie?
Well you're right I can't give you any spoilers other than to say it is about to become and eventful summer for Mattie. As for insight I think we're all a little bit Mattie. Not just women but men as well. In the first book Mattie confronts her tormentor like we all wish we could. Unfortunately for Mattie this was a bit more complicated and dealt with her family. I think for a lot of people it is impossible to confront that kind of thing when it happens at home.
Is this a bit what your home life was like? You came out while still technically a teenager and Pittsburgh is not exactly known for being queer friendly.
Oh no. My family has always been supportive of me. I came out at 18 and a freshman in college. I always knew though. I was never really interested in guys. I gave it a go at a homecoming once but it really just ended like a bad comedy in the back seat of a dodge neon.
You are right Pittsburgh was a hard place to be out as a young student. College made it good though. Most schools now have great gay/straight alliances or LGBTQ clubs that really help people find a place they can fit in. I know it helped me find my place.
Your poetry is really fun and awesome. It's a complete departure of Mattie.
Yeah, I had my poetry published before Mattie was a reality. A lot of my poetry is just me being me with a chance to make my thoughts sound cool.
Your readings are really fun. You have a flair for performing your work.
Oh well thank you. Yes, I love to do readings. It's a lot of fun and I really love doing it. I think you're flirting with me a little aren't you?"
You caught me. I still don't understand your fascination with hockey. Care to share with us?
Hockey is brilliant. I started going to games with my Dad back in Pittsburgh. I grew up in the sad years where you almost had to pay people to go but recently Pittsburgh has been flooded with amazing talent and in case you didn't know we won the Stanley Cup last year. I flew home to watch the game on tv with my Dad and attend the parade.
You've called New York home for the last three years. What prompted your switch to South Carolina?
Ah maybe this should be listed under Mattie spoilers? Or am I just messing with everyone? No really I just needed to get out of the city. I love New York but I needed a break. I really need some fresh air and the ability to see the stars for a change. I still frequent New York though. So be on the look out.
Well anything else we should know about I mean rumor has it you're single. Are you looking?
What lady such as myself in their mid 20's with decent vision isn't looking? I mean I'm not blind.
